Building the Confidence to Answer in Maths Class

Some of the most capable students never put their hand up in maths. They might even know the answer, but the fear of being wrong in front of the class keeps them quiet. Over time, staying silent becomes a habit, and their confidence shrinks along with it.

Why students stay quiet in maths

Familiarity builds confidence

One of the most effective ways to help students speak up is to let them see the content before their class does. When a student has already met a topic, explained it and practised it, they walk into class feeling prepared rather than lost. That's why we move students ahead of their course while closing any gaps.

Small classes give them practice

In a class of around four to five students, every student is noticed and encouraged to contribute. They practise explaining their thinking in a supportive space, where mistakes are treated as part of learning, not something to be embarrassed about.

How parents can help at home

When students feel prepared and safe, the hand starts going up. And the confidence they gain from answering in class spreads to tests, homework and beyond.
